this week I started a full time job as a graphic designer.
graphic design is not my background. I went to school for interior design and psychology and always saw myself designing office spaces or hotels or museums or hospitals. I wanted to create environments that had a large scale positive impact on communities and individuals alike.
In the last 1-2 years, I realized that I wasn’t thrilled by interior design anymore. I loved (and still love) the conceptual development and specification aspects, but so much of the process left me wanting more. More of the color palettes and material boards, more intentional photography, more dynamic presentation decks. So I started exploring other design disciplines.
Looking for work outside of your area of study can be intimidating, especially when you are new to the professional scene and want to develop a skill set that others built for themselves over the course of a 4 year degree program. But here I am, making a lateral career move only 1 year out of college.
There is nothing about your major, work experience, or job title that will ever fully define you. Do the things that make you happy, seek out the challenges that excite you, and choose to keep growing. I support you.
